Qualified patients are allowed a 90-day supply of medical marijuana. 

Your Pennsylvania medical marijuana card will take up to 21 days of processing time from the date your application was received and payment was submitted. Cards are mailed within 14 days after payment has been received.

Once approved, the doctor will generate a unique medical marijuana recommendation that will be accessible in the Pennsylvania State Patient Portal. Your Pennsylvania specific certificate will be ready shortly after. Once you receive the certificate, you must complete your registration in the State Portal. 

In the portal, you will need to complete the application and enter in all of your information exactly how it is presented on your Pennsylvania ID. Be sure that your address is recognized by the USPS as a valid mailing address. Also, enter only digits and do not use spaces of hyphens.

Then,  you will need to finalize your registration by paying an application fee. The fee is $50 and paid directly to the state of Pennsylvania. Patients that can provide evidence of enrollment in the following programs may qualify for a discounted medical marijuana ID card (no fee):

  • Medicaid,
  • PACE/ PACENET
  • CHIP
  • SNAP
  • WIC.

 

Once you complete your application and confirm your registration, a physical card will be mailed to you by the state. It will arrive within 7-14 business days. Once you receive your cannabis card, you may visit licensed dispensaries in Pennsylvania.

You can renew your ID card up to 60 days before its expiration date. You must get a new certification from a doctor annually. 

Once your doctor confirms your certification and your annual payment is up to date, a new card will be sent to you at the address listed in your patient portal under ‘profile settings’. The new card will become effective after the expiration date of the original card, so continue using your current card until then. 

Payments for renewal are made annually. You’ll receive an email 30 days before your renewal fee is due, containing instructions for the $50 payment (or $0 if you qualify for a fee reduction).

  • The state of Pennsylvania does not charge a sales tax on medical marijuana purchases
  • In Pennsylvania, medical marijuana may only be used on private property or any privately owned area that is out of view of the public
  • Patients are not required to complete a background check. However, caregivers must complete a background check and any criminal record will be reviewed during the approval process. 

Caregivers must also register with the state of Pennsylvania to obtain a registry card.

Patients can designate up to 2 caregivers. Caregivers can care for multiple medical marijuana patients. 

Caregivers must complete a background check. Caregivers cannot have been convicted of a criminal offense relating to the sale or possession of drugs, narcotics, or a controlled substance in the last 5 years.

Applications take 3-4 weeks to be approved or denied. Once a decision has been made, you will be notified via email. If approved, you must login to the Registry and pay the fee.

Pennsylvania does not currently offer reciprocity for the medical marijuana program.
