Getting a Medical Marijuana Card in Oklahoma

medical marijuana in Oklahoma

Are you interested in using medical marijuana or medical cannabis? If you live in Oklahoma, you can now get a medical marijuana card. As of May 7, 2019, HB 2612 went into effect making this possible.

Wondering how to start? Questions on where to find a medical marijuana doctor in Oklahoma? Prestodoctor can help you get qualified with our verified doctors.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Oklahoma

In simple steps, you must firstly obtain a medical marijuana recommendation from a licensed Oklahoma physician. Once approved, you will register with OMMA (Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority). You will then create an account with OMMA, and click “Apply Now” on the page.

Finally after payment and approval, your Oklahoma MMJ ID will be mailed directly to you. Below is a more detailed guide to the process:

First, you’ll need to speak with one of our qualified medical doctors at a time most convenient for you! The physician will conduct an evaluation to determine if your medical condition can improve with marijuana use. All Prestodoctor appointments are conducted online, from the comfort of your own home (or a place of your choosing!).

Please note, you cannot use your primary care physician or any Oklahoma state licensed doctor. The doctor must be registered with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana program.

How can I qualify? Oklahoma does not have a specific list of conditions to get a MMJ recommendation. Other states have a list of qualifying conditions that the patients must meet to get an MMJ. Qualifying conditions vary from state to state. To get your medical marijuana card at PrestoDoctor, you must be 18 years old.

As a result of these Oklahoma MMJ laws, your doctor can prescribe medical marijuana if they feel your condition would benefit from using.

Finally, you will complete the application and get charged for your appointment (patients only pay if approved!). If you have any questions, you can receive help from your prescribing physician or our staff.

Information You Need for the Application Process

To get an MMJ, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Full name
  • Home address and mailing address
  • Date of birth
  • Telephone number
  • Valid email address
  • Physician information
  • You signature dated with 30 days of the application date

If you find the question, “Physician Certifying Board”, put “NA” in this field. Since this law is new, there are still some items under revision.

Documentation Needed for the Application

All requested documentation must be valid and unexpired. You must provide all these documents as digital or color copies. That is to say, if the documents have expired they will not be valid and will not count.

Provide one of the items on this list as proof of Oklahoma residency:

  • An Oklahoma driver’s license or identification card (front of card in color)
  • The preceding year’s State of Oklahoma tax return document
  • An Oklahoma utility bill (for the calendar month preceding the date of application. Cell phone and internet bills are NOT valid).
  • A residential property deed showing ownership of Oklahoma property
  • Current rental agreement for OK residential property
  • Other documentation OMMA deems sufficient. You can call OMMA at (405) 522-OMMA to see what other (if any) they would accept

You will also need to provide one of the following to show proof of identity:

  • Oklahoma driver’s license (front and back)
  • Oklahoma identification card (front and back)
  • U.S. passport or other photo identification issued by the U.S. government
  • Tribal identification card approved by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety for identification

Additionally, you will need to provide a clear, color, full-face digital photograph. You must also have an Adult Patient Physician Recommendation Form dated within 30 days of the application. Lastly, if you receive Medicaid (SoonerCare) or Medicare, you must provide the proof of Medicaid (Soonercare) insurance card or enrollment documentation.

How Do I Pay for a Card?

Are you wondering how much is a medical marijuana card? The cost of a medical marijuana card appointment thru PrestoDoctor is $109.99 for a recommendation, which is valid for two years.

Upon being approved for your recommendation you will need to apply with the state of Oklahoma.

The typical fee for the state application is $100. If you have Medicaid (SoonerCare) or Medicare, you will pay a decreased fee of $20 for the state application. Remember you must have proof of Soonercare or Medicare enrollment. You may pay this using a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover card as either credit or debit card.

In other words, your medical marijuana card costs will be depending on if you qualify for a decreased state fee.

If you do not have a credit card, do not worry. You may buy a pre-paid MasterCard or Visa card at a retail store. You can put the application and processing fees on this card. Then you will use the card to pay your online application fees.

What If I Need a Caregiver?

Some individuals are unable to administer medical marijuana to themselves and therefore, they need the help of a caregiver. To be a caregiver in Oklahoma, one must be at least 18 years old and a state resident. The caregiver must provide an Oklahoma license or state ID card along with documentation that they are designated to assist a patient. In Oklahoma, caregivers do not have to pay a state registration fee.

In this situation, you can get a caregiver license with documentation from the physician. You must include your Adult Patient Physician Recommendation Form with your application (don’t worry – we will help you with this!). You may also submit this at a later date by accessing your online account.

A patient can only have one licensed caregiver at a time. This caregiver must also submit an Adult Patient Caregiver Designation Form signed by you.

What Happens Once You Finish the Application?

Now that you have submitted the forms and application, what happens next?

OMMA will then review your application. They look to see if your application is complete and meets all requirements.

You will receive an approval letter with your identification card. The card is mailed within 14 days of your application submission date.

Once you are approved and registered with the DOH, your card is valid for 2 YEARS.

In the case of unclear or missing information or documents, OMMA will then send an email to you. They will request the needed information. You will then log into your account and make the corrections.

The submission date is the date when you submit all the information and documentation. Thus, if you have corrections, your submission date will change.

If the OMMA reviews and denies an application because all requirements aren’t met, you will, however, receive a denial letter. This will arrive within 14 days of application submission. The letter will state the reason for the denial.

Will I Be On a List?

Many people fear that obtaining a medical marijuana card in Oklahoma will put their name on a list of marijuana users. Rest assured that there is no list. The DEA does not know who has MMJs and no actual database exists.

Your patient status remains confidential. In other words, all healthcare information falls under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protection.

Most important, as with all medical information, your medical marijuana evaluations fall under HIPAA rules. The release of any information requires patient permission.

Doctor-patient confidentiality rules extend to the police, department of motor vehicles, and employers. Physicians must keep these records secure and separate. Online sites must legally meet HIPAA regulations as well.

You do not need to worry that anyone besides you and your physician will know about your MMJ card. In conclusion, getting access to legal medical marijuanas in Oklahoma is strictly confidential.
